Worker’s cottage renovation and extension in Greencastle, Co. Donegal

Our clients approached us seeking a refurbishment and extension to these wonderful twin cottages under one roof in the heart of Greencastle in Inishowen. The new plan allows the two tiny cottages to become one bedroom wing, which is bolstered by the new contemporary kitchen, dining and living area extending to the southwest.

The off-centre ridge is informed by the position of the existing party-wall chimney in the original cottage, and a high clerestory window to the southeast side will allow the late morning sun to flood the space with light. Patio doors to the southwest and northwest sides allow the afternoon and evening sun in, while providing access to the gardens and deck area. The extension will work in tandem with the original cottage and an existing stone boundary wall to frame a sun-filled courtyard-like area to the west side.

We received planning permission for the renovation and extension in late 2024 and aim to go on-site soon.
